Video Production

Over 70% of communication is through video. Examples of this would be YouTube videos, movie trailers, and news reports. The process of making videos use to take many people, but now most videos are made by one person. This should not discourage you because the video production industry is growing. There are jobs available in many different places such as broadcasting stations, video production companies, public relation firms, and ad agencies. There is also a very large market for freelance projects as well. Videos play such a large roll in our lives that there will always be a need for people to create these videos, and because of this it is important to understand the basics of video production.


Grad Plan

The grad plan was created to help students be more efficient and know what classes are required for graduation, and to plan them out. A helpful tool to let you know what classes are required is the Degree Audit. It lists what classes you can choose that are required. Another tool to help you graduate faster is the Fast Track system. Once you have over 60 credits you can choose to stay at school year round to be done faster. The cap for credits is roughly 140. If you are a transfer student at least 30 credit hours must be taken at BYUI. Also to be considered a full time student you must take 12 credits and 14 for scholarships.

Introduction to Advertising

Every one has the desire to create something. It is innate and can not be explained. Everyone is creative so do not fall into the lie of “I can’t do it I’m not creative”.

Good advertisement is created by making memorable and entertaining ads. People in advertisement have to be good story tellers, and you have five seconds to get people hooked.

The different types of advertisements are print ads, brochures, direct mail, websites, outdoor, internet, and social media. These methods are used to persuade individuals to buy certain goods or services.

Organizational Communication & Advocacy

Organizational communication focuses on social issues. Groups that use this are politics, non-prophet organizations, along with other agencies and foundations. This type of communication requires you to be able to do research and to analyze policy and make sure it is accurate and the articulation of words is easy to understand.

Some tips are to do the work you find meaningful and to challenge yourself to dream. Also look up internships you want to do and see what skills are required so you can develop those skills.

Public Relations

Public Relations is a planned process to influence public opinion. Every organization has a story it’s PR’s job to find the story and tell it.

Public Relations requires you to be able to do research and gather information, and to be able to publish and provide information. In PR you have to write news releases.

Public Relations is considered more reliable than advertising because it receives a third party endorsement. It promotes the organization at a low cost, but that gives the company less control over what is presented.

One final tip from public relations is to work for a company that you believe in because “you can’t pour perfume on a skunk.”

Tips to help you with Visual Communication

Most jobs now require the use of visual media. That is why it is a good idea to look into visual communications. Something that will help set you apart from other applicants is the E-S-V factor. Efficient, Skilled, Versatile. If you have these qualities it will help you go far in finding jobs. Another way that you can obtain jobs is working on your SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. The key is to make your work easy to find on search engines and people will most likely approach you. These tips can not only apply to visual communication, but all forms of communication. Thank you Sister Caryn Esplin for introducing visual communication and providing tips that can help students find a job.

Intro to I-Comm

I-Comm consists of the Scroll, Scroll TV, and Soapbox Agency. By signing up for any of these classes you will gain experience. They use the latest technology and teach you how to use the tools that are currently out in the work field.

One of the main things that stuck with me is to not be intimidated. Don’t be afraid to sign up or apply. You can only grow. “The difference between you and someone else in Hollywood is they did something about it.”

Advice from the Journalism Department

1.Be more informed. If you spend 5 minutes a day you will learn so much.

2. Think about your education. If you think about your career in terms of it starting when you walked on to campus it will change the way you pursue your education.

3. Blog! If you write about something you care about 3 times a week by the time you graduate you will have a huge portfolio, and it can help you network.

4. Consider Journalism Strongly. Journalism unifies, informs, and connects people. There are new mediums to tell stories, and new targeted opportunities.
